The August of 1945 were terrible times for the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. United States dropped two atom bombs Uranium Gun type- "Little Boy" and Plutonium impolsion type "Fat Man" which resulted in death of around 129,000 people. However there was this tree that survived all of this and it was a Gymnosperm named Ginkgo biloba native to China, but is also found in Japan and mainly around Buddhist monastries. After the disaster a shrine was created around it. Gymnosperms are generally considered as living fossil and a further study on their molecular level would provide a better insight towards our knowledge about evolution and its further exploitation as it has got many medicinal values.
